Regarding the Twenty-20 world cup.

The inaugural twenty-20 world cup in the new format of twenty over a
side that was won by the Indians has been accepted by the majority of
the major cricketing nations. This short form of the game would probably
be the proper vehicle for the game of cricket to reach the American
continent. The short duration of the game is ideally suited for the
American people; this game is just like the base ball, in terms of
hitting the ball clean. There is big time money to be had from a game
when it is introduced in the North American continent. What ever revenue
that is being got by the cricketing boards now would look very small in
comparison when the Twenty-20 form of cricket becomes famous in North
America. How ever I had a question that is yet to be properly answered
to my satisfaction. Now a team whether it is promoted by one association
or the other, ultimately won the world cup in a particular format of
cricket and the game has such a huge fan following in India, in spite of
it being not even the national game of the nation, the natural thing to
do is to broadcast the matches in the national network. When a team
claims that it represents the nation, it should be backed fully. At
least the final that the team representing India played and eventually
won should have been broadcast live in the national television. At least
the radio commentary could have been done. The practice of private firms
getting the telecast rights of matches that are being played in a
country is not fair. See, some company might have purchased the telecast
rights of all cricket matches in any format that is being played within
a country's jurisdiction and when another country's team comes and plays
in that country, the television viewers of the touring team have to
watch from those channels that have bought the feeds by paying huge
fees, and these channels pass on the cost to the viewers by making these
channels -pay channels. I suggest that when ever touring team plays a
game of cricket, the viewers of the touring team should be allowed to
watch the match in their national television channels. The argument of
cricket consuming the precious office hours is not true, since in this
new twenty-20 format only three hours is being taken to decide the
match. It would take ten hours to decide a match in the one day format.
Now it is comparatively less. And most of the matches can be scheduled
to occur in the evenings, so that more office people get to watch the
matches and the television channels are also happy because they are able
to get prime time advertisement charges for the spots being aired during
the twenty-20 matches. It makes good economic sense to play these
matches in the evenings. I suggest another thing also, when a touring
team plays; this aspect of timing of the match should be looked into so
that maximum viewer ship is obtained. This can be done by arranging the
order of the matches. For example if in a day three matches are
scheduled and one match is between neighboring countries this can be
done in the late evening to get prime time viewer ship. If two touring
teams are playing the second match this match can be scheduled in the
early part of the day, since at that time the match would get prime
time viewer ship audience in the touring team's country. For example, if
New Zealand and India are playing in South Africa, this match can be
scheduled in the evening as the second match being played, so that more
viewers are able to view the match without getting permission from the
office. Further the number of potential viewers would be more in India
as compared to viewers in New Zealand. So India's viewers should be in
the mind of the match scheduler, while devising the dates and timings of
the matches to be played. This kind of planning should be done to get
maximum viewer ship for a match and I am sure this kind of planning is
already being done and if it is not done now, at least from now onwards
this should be taken seriously. This arrangement is mutually beneficial,
for the broadcasters they get maximum viewers for their television ads,
and for the viewers, they get to watch their matches without cutting
their office hours.
