The recent heavy rainfall that poured in Chennai city due to the depression in the bay of Bengal has done one useful thing, fill up the water table , with the result that the wells in Chennai are full of water now. The rising water table might have been also due to the rain water harvesting being done in numerous structures in Chennai. Where by the rain water is channeled to the well or into the ground through PVC pipes instead of going in waste to the drains which eventually empty into the sea. In our house too the rain water harvesting is being done for the past eight or so years now. During this bout of rainfall I took the opportunity to fill the empty vessels like buckets and tubs with rain water, which is fairly pure and soft, having very little dissolved minerals., from the balcony at the front of our house. Infact we have been using this rain water to wash our clothes for the past two days. I feel that there should be some legislation making it mandatory for any new building constructed to possess the rain water harvesting facility. A good example is the Chennai Metropolitan Bus Terminus, where the rain water is collected in huge under ground tanks. This water is being used to clean the long distance buses that reach the terminus after their long journey.

Yesterday I bought hundred grams of roasted peanuts and bought the Buisiness Line newspaper. The browsing that I did in the browsing(the place from where I am now typing this) cost me fifteen indain rupees for one hour. I have observed that when I visit the browsing centers without any material to write, the time passes in reading emais, browsing the web pages etc, and nothing concrete happens, that is why now iam actuallywriting this in the diaryand Iam typing this inthekeyboard . After browsing I browsed through the Econimic Times newspaper that I bought on Monday.there was a supplement with that newspaper. When I went to bed after reading the paper it was close to one o clock in the early morning.

Today I filled the air in the wheels of the Rajdoot Bike that has been with us from 1982. I have been riding regularly these few months about ten kilometers daily on an average. The riding comfort is great in comparision to the meped that I usually drive. However there are many scratches in the bike and at the momst unlikely places, like on top of the front mud guard and over the petrol tank. The reason might have been due to the frequent transfers that happened to my father and since my father was using the bike to go to office, these scratches might have happened during the shifting of the household materials from one place to the next posting. The bike would be firmly tied to the body of the vehicle transporting the household goods so that it doesnot shake and while taking the materials these scratches might have happened. Hence to improve the appearance of the bike, I am considering a round of spray painting for the 175 cc bike.i heard that this bike isn’t being manufactured these days. However the comfort is great.

Ihave been watching the euromaxx program for sometime now today in the evening. The news about the strengthening euro against the US dollar was discussed in the journal of DW television. I viewed it in the direct to home service of doordarshan. The main reason why the german exports even now are increasing or more competitive is due to the fact that these exports are happening with in the euro zone itself and also due to the previous contract terms that had been agreed to. It would be known only when the time of renewing the contracts, whether the exports from germany rises or falls. I was surprised to learn that endoscope is being used to look inside the engines being manufactured in germany. I had assumed that endoscope is used only in medical applications.

Letters to the editor.

Sir,
The win by the Indian Cricket team is really historic and the huge fan
following that the sport has in India has made it possible for the huge
reception that was given to the players. This is a kind of barometer for
the advertisers to gauge the extent of popularity of the sport in a
nation, seen from a commercial aspect. It is unfair to compare the game
of Cricket with that of Field Hockey. We should remember that now Hockey
is not even our national sport. It was removed from that status some
time back. It is just another game. Just because the Indian Hockey team
has brought gold medals from Olympic Games in the past doesn't guarantee
the popularity of the sport for posterity. There are a lot of issues
involved in making a sport popular in the media and among the masses. I
feel this should be better left to the market to decide for itself the
popularity of a sport. If comparison is to stretched further, then why
shouldn't the football players protest against limited attention shown
for their victory. The valid grievance that was made by the hockey
players that the rewards were not commensurate with their performance
should be addressed. I suggest that a scheme of rewards should be
announced whenever a team is selected for a tournament, so that the
players know before playing the tournament, what they would be expecting
when they emerge victorious.
